SOLO PERFORMANCE WITH GCYO

Greenville County Youth Orchestra regularly features its members as soloists in its concerts throughout the year. Three solo positions are available for the 2008-2009 season. Though their performance parameters are somewhat more restricted, The Philharmonic is also able to showcase three student soloists as well.  In the best circumstances, therefore, the orchestra system may feature up to six soloists in the upcoming season.

Whether they are single or multiple-movement concerti, GCYO’s student soloists perform complete works.  Applicants must keep this fact in mind when applying for an audition.  Soloists with the Philharmonic perform single movement works or single movements of multiple-movement concerti.

The current round of soloist auditions will take place on Saturday, April the 5th.

Winners will be announced at the GCYO Banquet in May. General qualifications for a solo position include:

• Mastery of the solo work performed

• Appropriateness of the work as GCYO or Philharmonic repertoire

• Experience and musical maturity of candidate

• Competing students must submit a score and a recording of their work and attain tentative approval by the Director in advance of the audition.

• Students must perform an entire movement of their intended work in the audition, and must be accompanied by piano.

The awarding of a solo position is made based upon written and numerical evaluations of the judge(s) hearing the audition and ESPECIALLY upon the Director’s judgment concerning the appropriateness of the work being performed with respect to programming and education.  In the case where a soloist’s work is, for some reason, deemed by the Director to not compliment these goals, that musician and the Director may discuss alternative works. A soloist family may be asked to assist (or to help locate a sponsor) if the work to be performed is unusually expensive to rent.

GCYO is under no obligation to fill each potential solo position with a current orchestra member.  GCYO may fill a soloist spot with an outside musician as its Director deems it necessary and appropriate for programming and for the artistic and educational goals of the orchestra.

Applications for Soloist Audition 2008-2009 must be completed and turned in by Tuesday, February 12, 2008
