The Young Artist Orchestra and Philharmonic: Audition for Membership

The goal of auditions for the Young Artist Orchestra is to identify students capable of learning orchestral repertoire Grade V-VI in difficulty, as well as less "difficult" repertoire whose performance requires musical maturity and subtlety. Philharmonic candidates will be capable of performing repertoire of Grade IV-V.

String Auditions

Auditions for both YAO and Philharmonic string players will consist of scales, specified orchestral excerpts and sight reading.  A solo selection will not be required. Specific requirements are as follows:

SCALES

All scales will be the same whether auditioning for the Philharmonic or GCYO. Scales will be played in eighth notes, quarter note = 60-80 for Philharmonic, and 80-100 for YAO.

* Violin:  all scales will be three octaves G major, B-flat major, A melodic minor (slur 8 per bow)

* Viola and Cello: C major (3 octaves), B-flat major (2 octaves), D melodic minor (2 octaves, slur 8 per bow)

* Bass: F major (2 octaves), B-flat major (1 octave), E melodic minor (2 octaves, slur 8 per bow)

Wind, Brass, and Percussion Auditions

Woodwind and brass students trying out for the Young Artists' Orchestra and/or the Philharmonic should be prepared to play a solo of
her/his own choice and scales. The solo should be from the instrument's standard solo literature and does not need to be accompanied or memorized. To search for an acceptable piece please refer to the following link. (http://www.bandlink.org/events/soloens/MusicList/SEList.asp )

Students interested in the Philharmonic should also expect to play up to 9 scales from memory over the range of the instrument (i.e. SC
Clinic Band scale requirements - http://www.bandlink.org/events/allstate/as2008/clscales.html and students interested in the Young Artists' Orch. will be asked to play up to all 12 major scales from memory over the range of the instrument (i.e. SC Senior Band scale requirements -
