The Young Artist Orchestra and Philharmonic AuditionsAuditions for the 2010-2011 season are still being accepted! Our next available audition date is Saturday, March 20th. Other times may be scheduled as needed. Please fill out the audition application form as soon as possible!The goal of auditions for the Young Artist Orchestra is to identify students capable of learning orchestral repertoire Grade V-VI in difficulty, as well as less "difficult" repertoire whose performance requires musical maturity and subtlety. Philharmonic candidates will be capable of performing repertoire of Grade IV-V. StringsAuditions for both YAO and Philharmonic string players will consist of scales, specified orchestral excerpts and sight reading. A solo selection will not be required. Specific requirements are as follows: Philharmonic Scales: * Violin: all scales will be three octaves G major, B-flat major, A melodic minor (quarter note = 60, quarter note separate bows and sixteenth notes slurred 8 per bow) * Viola and Cello: C major (3 octaves), B-flat major (2 octaves), D melodic minor (quarter note = 60, quarter note separate bows and sixteenth notes sllurred 8 per bow) * Bass: F major (2 octaves), B-flat major (1 octave), E melodic minor (2 octaves, quarter note = 60, quarter note separate bows and sixteenth notes slurred 8 per bow)
YAO Scales:
* Violin: Two 3 octave scales (one Major; one minor) from the following: C Major, E Major, F Major, f minor, e minor, a minor. * Viola: C Major, B-flat Major and a minor (3 octave) * Cello: C Major(4 octaves, sep. bows), F major (3 octaves, sep. bows), b melodic minor (two octaves, slur four notes) All scales: eight notes, quarter beat = 80-100 * Bass: F major (2 octaves), B-flat major (1 octave), E melodic minor (2 octaves, quarter note = 60, quarter note separate bows and sixteenth notes slurred 8 per bow)
Winds and Brass Woodwind and brass students trying out for the Young Artists' Orchestra and/or the Philharmonic should be prepared to play scales and designated orchestral excerpts. Students interested in the Philharmonic should expect to play all 9 scales from memory over the range of the instrument (i.e. SC Students interested in the Young Artists' Orch. will be asked to play all 12 major scales from memory over the range of the instrument (i.e. SC Senior Band scale requirements - http://www.bandlink.org/events/allstate/as2008/srscales.html. Percussion Percussion auditions for both orchestras will consist of specified orchestral excerpts and sight reading. Please prepare as much of the excerpts as you are able.
