Philharmonic: Musician Profile

Philharmonic members:

  • Are middle and high school students with exceptional talent and growing ability on their instruments
  • Have been in school strings or band classes since or before the sixth grade. 
  • Have taken private studio lessons for three or often more years.
  • Have auditioned successfully into Junior Region Orchestra or Band and often Junior All-State Orchestra or Band.

Philharmonic string players:

  • Are fluent in third and are learning about higher positions (violinists and violists)
  • Have fluent use of vibrato and produce a strong, characteristic tone
  • Have a growing vocabulary of bow strokes, including détaché, martelé, brush, and spiccato, and play comfortably in various parts of the bow
  • Can read notation in all common time signatures
  • Are familiar with musical concepts and terms through the Essential Technique book.
